The balloon held proudly by a family member seated in a front row captured the emotions evident in the auditorium at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, January 8, 2014, when 125 PTI graduates crossed the stage to receive their certificate or degree.
In her opening comments Vice President of Education Eileen Steffan began the evening saying “Welcome to the end and welcome to the beginning” before turning the microphone over to Sr. Vice President of Academic Affairs Mark Scott who announced the newest recipients of PTI’s Caliguiri Award, named in honor of the late Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh and PTI graduate Richard S. Caliguiri. The five selected by their instructors and academic chairs to be honored are Monica Blackwell, a Practical Nursing graduate; Mia Contes, a Therapeutic Massage Practitioner graduate; Samantha Grove, a Surgical Technology graduate; Brad Trylko, an Electronics Engineering Technology graduate; and James Van Poolen, an Information Technology graduate. Collectively these Caliguiri Award winners had a 3.65 gpa and 98% attendance.
In his congratulatory speech PTI President Greg DeFeo extended a special thank you to members of the military who were graduating and wore red, white and blue honor cords. He reminded all graduates “You're here because you worked hard, stayed late” and cautioned them “Don't miss your opportunities. Don't miss your destiny” before instructing them to move their tassels from right to left to symbolize the transition from student to graduate.
Degrees conferred and certificates awarded, PTI’s new alumni association members marched up both aisles to the applause of parents, grandparents, husbands, wives, children and friends who waited anxiously to hug and personally congratulate their graduate.
