A group of PTI videography students recently took an unforgettable field trip to the historic Ohio State Reformatory where the film, Shawshank Redemption was shot. The trip was part of a videography assignment to create and edit a documentary. The team consisted of students Eric Kemble, Melissa Knight, Ethan Mansberger, Ryan Rust, and Christine Sloban, from Multimedia Instructor, Mark Dobrowolski”s class in Advanced Editing.
“ This was a dream come true for anybody who loves great images” said Mr. Dobrowolski. “ The sheer size and visual impact of the building was awe inspiring to the crew and they were eager to start shooting this location. They explored and photographed many areas of the reformatory that were challenging to shoot, including basements, death row, and the vast cell blocks. The team came prepared with questions targeted to their interview subjects and recorded some remarkable stories.”
The film project was a two-day trip that involved the use of advanced equipment including a drone camera provided by PTI Marketing Multimedia Director, Volkmar Kuntz, who assisted with the project. The drone camera offered the opportunity to get some very unique footage.
“We chose this location because of its beautiful gothic architecture,” said Melissa Knight, one of the student videographers. “and because it is supposed to be haunted.” “This is a great experience for us because it gives us the opportunity to get first hand expertise in the field”
The first product of this project is some fascinating initial footage shot by the students that you can view here.
Stay tuned to this spot at PTI.edu to view the progress of this film project. The final documentary will be complete by the end of the term and it will be posted here.
